I’ve always been a bookworm and I’ve always read for pleasure. I loved books from an early age, spent hours choosing books from my school library and feel incredibly blessed that my kids love books too.
Saying that, trying to find books that engage, excite and resonate with children, is a real challenge. You want books that encourage them to put the screens down, cuddle up with a great book, lose themselves, fly through and savour every word.
Literacy skills are crucial for learning across all subjects and it’s critical for children to read well to make their way in the modern world.
As research from The Reading Agency has shown, reading is more important to children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education or social class. They believe that everything changes when we read. And so do we at LoveReading.
So we are here to support schools, teachers, school librarians and parents to encourage our children, our future generation to read more, to find THAT book that will inspire them to read more, and again and again.
A research project between Open University and the UK Literacy Association examined children’s and teachers’ reading lives and established effective ways to support Reading for Pleasure. Teachers’ knowledge of children’s literature and other texts is not commonly regarded as part of the subject knowledge required of teachers, yet this research - Teachers as Readers research has shown it is highly significant in developing children as readers who can and DO choose to read.
LoveReading4Schools is here to support teachers in reviewing and recommending great books, right across the subject range. Our overall mission is to promote reading for pleasure with quality texts that are perfectly pitched for the age group and the curriculum. We have particularly avoided blockbusters, classic or set texts, known to everyone, so that we can include poetry, stunning information texts and inspirational books in which all children and young people can find themselves reflected.
To this end, we are incredibly excited today to relaunch LoveReading4Schools to our thousands of schools who have supported us for many years. We have taken your feedback on board and created a support system, a hub, a recommendation tool to help you invest in the best books to support your curriculum and to help you engender that life-long love of reading in your students.
- You can search for books by year group, age range and subject area.
- You can read reviews from our experts, our panels of children reader reviewers, our school librarian reviewers and our teacher reviewers.
