1 in 4 children cannot read well by the age of 11. The Reading Agency and libraries are on a mission to change this with a UK-wide programme: the Summer Reading Challenge. The 2024 Challenge starts on 22nd June online and in Scotland, and on 6th July in England and Wales.
You can make a huge difference this year by encouraging your pupils to take part over the holidays. It’s the UK’s biggest reading for pleasure programme for primary school children in libraries – in 2023 they reached close to 700,000 children. And it’s free to take part.
Download the free information pack for schools or visit their School Zone to learn more.
Taking part can significantly improve children’s reading skills and confidence, and aid the successful transition to new year groups and key stages.
What you can do now:
Talk about the Challenge in your classroom.
Download free posters and activity sheets, and explore new books with your class.
You can view the Summer Reading Challenge recommended reads here through our partnership with The Reading Agency.
Or dive into each list separately, where you can download the list as a PDF, add to your school's LoveReading4Schools Page, or purchase to your heart's content - whilst donating much-needed funds for your school's reading for pleasure programme.
Get in touch with your local library service. You can book a visit or special assembly.
Tell parents and carers about the Challenge. Use our handy newsletter template, or share key info in 23 languages

This is one of the first ways LoveReading4Kids are partnering with The Reading Agency. They recently announced our collaboration whereby selected booklists on their website will now have a link to buy the book through LoveReading4Kids or LoveReading. If you purchase through LoveReading4Kids, you will get 25% of the cover price of the book back, an effective way of schools maximising their book budget.
