LoveReading4Kids had the chance to interview Frank Cottrell-Boyce, the new Waterstones Children's Laureate for 2024-26 and here's what he had to say:

When did you know you wanted to be a writer? What were your first steps to becoming a published author?
I first realised that words were my thing in year six when my teacher read out something I'd written. It was hearing someone else's voice read out my words that made me realise that words could be a superpower.  Made me notice that some words are funnier / sadder / more precise than others.

How important is it for children to have early access to the magic of reading and stories?
It's crucial - not so much for attainment as for the building of a happy place inside the child.  When you share a story with a child, you're giving them a hug that will last them the rest of their lives!!!

Did you grow up in a book loving family? How important are role models for reading?
As a child I lived with my brother and parents and grandma in a two bedroom flat.  It was pretty squashed.  I'm sure this was why my Mum was forever taking us to the library.  So books and libraries have always been associated in my mind with Mum, with space and peace.

What advice would you give to any budding writers out there?
I give the same advice to everyone - brain surgeon, bin man, baker, mum, dad, nurse, whatever - read a lot.  Just read a lot. It helps!

Which five children's books have you recently read and enjoyed?
I LOVE the Grimwood books by Nadia Shireen.  I was blown away by The Skull by Jon Klassen. I love Sophy Henn's Lifesize books and really enjoyed Joseph Coelho's Our Tower.

What does LoveReading4Kids mean to you?
I believe if a child is going to love reading they're going to have to find a book they really love.  One size does not fit all.
