A bright and colourful picture book about a pelican and a seagull becoming friends
Pete and Suzie by Samantha Ahearne and Illustrated by Julie Sneeden is a bright and colourful picture book about a pelican and a seagull becoming friends with an introduction to yoga and breathing techniques. The illustrations are clear, vivid and colourful and really help to tell the story alongside the short sections of text on each page. I think young readers will enjoy looking at the pictures and the differences between the calm and orderly pelicans and the chaotic seagulls, and maybe recognise the seagull behaviour from their own trips to the seaside. The text is brief but still manages to convey the story clearly. Young readers could perhaps learn to read this independently but I think there are a number of more advanced words and phonics that would require the support of reading with an adult. The introduction of the yoga techniques is quite detailed, initially explaining the different chakras before giving some descriptions of different yoga poses. I liked the way that the breathing techniques were described. Breathing in a flower and blowing out candles created a really clear image that children can use to try it for themselves.
