It is an exciting adventure, involving art, long words, family and mystery. I recommend this book to any one who likes adventures and words - its brilliant!
I loved this book, it is just as brilliant as the first book and was exciting to read.
I recommend reading The Swifts first as otherwise you might struggle to understand the characters in this peculiar family, and if nothing else the second books gives away some of the story of the first book!
This time the swifts set off on an adventure to Paris to meet with the French branch of the family who like the swifts are named using a dictionary. There are lots of French words that have found their way into the English language to enjoy and I think it made my French just a little better! Shenanigan is on the trail of art thieves in this story, which gives her lots of opportunities for trouble, and adventure.
It is an exciting adventure, involving art, words and family and adventure. I loved the characters, old and new- Shenanigan is still my favourite. I recommend this book to any one who likes adventures and words!
A famous painting has been stolen from the Swifts and Shenanigan Swift is determined to get it back. I'd never read a mystery before and this book made me want to read the first book, and now I love all mysteries! 5 out of 5.
If you've read the first book in this series, The Swifts, you will recognise not just the title and characters, but the format of a mystery that needs to be solved. This is one of the best stories I have ever read! I like the aspect of mystery because I love trying to guess what's going to happen next and how the story is going to end.
The book is about a young girl called Shenanigan Swift and her sisters Phenomena and Felicity. Shenanigan is cheeky and naughty, as you may have guessed by her name, but she also believes she can have her own destiny and doesn't have to follow her name.
The book is about a famous painting which is stolen from the Swifts' house, and Shenanigan, her sisters and some of her other relatives go to France to see their cousins, the Marinets, who have been their rivals for years. There was an altercation in the past where at a card game the representative of the Swifts was cheating and so won the painting. So the Marinets had wanted the painting back for years. The Swifts go to the hotel Marinet, which the Marinets own and live in, to ask for the painting back. The Marinets say they haven't seen it and and also want it back so the two families go off hunting for the thieves.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars! I'd never read a mystery before and this book made me want to read the first book, and now I love all mysteries! I even got my brother to read it as it was so good and he never reads books other than mythology!
A very funny and surprising quest to track down the Ouvolpo.
This book follows Shenanigan Swift and her family travel to Paris after they are shocked by a midnight burglar. Their special painting is swapped for a rubber duck! In Paris they try to find the gang who stole their painting but things take a nasty turn when they find a dead body…
This book is a good book with funny and sad bits. New friendships made and old arguments came back to the surface as the clever thieves try to steal the art and tell everyone where the famous Pierrot is. Why is there no fifth floor in hotel Martinet?
I would recommend this book to other 7 years old and over but you may need a little help from Mum and Dad – particularly with the French bits.
This is an exciting mystery story where the Swift family travel to France and try to solve the mystery of the art thieves Oulvolpo. Every person's name has a meaning behind it. I loved how they all live up to their names - especially Shenanigan Swift!
This book is the second book about the family called The Swifts. They are all named after words in the dictionary and their names usually tell you about what their characters. I enjoyed this story because it kept you guessing about the mystery of who stole the artworks and there was lots of twists and turns in what happens. I liked it because there were lots of the same characters from the first book but also a whole new section of the family that lived in France where this book is mainly set. The French family also have names from the dictionary but all in French and it was fun guessing and finding out what their names meant too. Shenanigan is one of the main characters and she, along with her sisters and her cousin, try to follow the trail to unravel the mystery of the crimes. Phenomena is Shenanigan's sister and she is my favourite character because I liked her science laboratory and she is very good at figuring out the mysteries. There is lots about the meaning of words in this book and I liked that some of it was in French too as it added to the puzzling out of the story. It is also quite funny. I hope there is another Swifts adventure as I want to see what they get up to next. I especially liked the ending!
This was a funny and witty read that I couldn't put down.
Join Shenanigan Swift on a life changing adventure through the streets of Paris as she finds the truth to a century old disappearance.
I loved plunging into the mystery with Shenanigan as she sails defiantly over the English Channel, examines crime scenes methodically and squabbles rambunctiously with her cousins.
While Phenomena was an encyclopaedia of helpful facts and knowledge and Pomme was excitable and hospitable, my favourite character was Shenanigan as she unravels the mystery thread by thread, slowly picking the truth out of a dastardly web of deceit and lies. With her humour and wit she makes a fitting protagonist to this delightful sequel of The Swifts.
This book made me realise how iniquitous and cruel the world can be when someone wants something –they may even resort to murder –not everybody is nice and kind.
This was a funny and witty read that I couldn't put down. I finished it in one sumptuous sitting.
An amazing whirlwind of mystery. I would highly recommend this book to all children who love perplexing cases, daring heists, and shocking murders!
The Swifts: A Gallery of Rogues is such an amazing sequel by Beth Lincoln. Not only has it got humour, but it also has a very peculiar mystery. First, a painting gets stolen from Swift House by a gang of criminals called Ouvolpo, but then when a dead body is found at one of Ouvolpo’s latest heists things get extremely complicated. What’s more the French relatives of the Swifts, the Martinets, have something to do with the disappearance of the famous artist Pierrot! Who can Shenanigan trust in this perplexing whirlwind of mystery?
This book could have not been better in any way! I absolutely loved it and read it all in one sitting. Gorgeous pictures compliment the amazing story, and the story is as fluid as a river! This book was such a gripping adventure, and I can’t wait for more instalments in the series! To summarise, I would highly recommend this book to all children who love perplexing cases, daring heists, and shocking murders!
Fantastic, funny - a mystery that pulls you in and confuses you!
5 star book without a doubt! It is a very funny and exciting story about the Swift family and their French cousins. Just when you think you have worked out what might be going on, it completely changes! We get to see a different side to Shenanigan who seems to be growing up a bit.
It's quite a mysterious, dark, thrilling story with murder, mischief, and mysteries everywhere.
I would recommend this to anyone that likes adventure - and I really hope there are more Swift books to come!
Mystery, etymology, gothic adventure. An exciting sequel to the first Swifts book.
Shenanigan and her family have been fighting for years with their relatives, the Martinets. However, when a valuable painting is stolen, Shenanigan travels to France and must work with her cousins to solve the crime. The story keeps you guessing with twists and turns.
When Ouvolpo strikes again in a French gallery, it is even more urgent to stop the criminals.
A Gallery of Rogues is perfect for fans of Robin Stevens and Katherine Rundell.
Keep up with Shenanigan as she turns detective in this latest book. Will she discover the truth behind the gang and find the priceless painting? Full of mystery, action and plot twists. A must read second book in the series.
This is the second book I the series and as we loved the first one we were really hopefully for this one. It didn’t disappoint.
Shenanigan swift is again up to her crime fighting and detective work. This time trying to find out about the crime team who swapped the priceless painting for an exploding inflatable bird.
As you can imaging this story has mysteries, action and adventure. It’s funny in parts and makes you think in others.
A good and well written book that will be enjoyed by many age groups.
Engaging, enthralling and entertaining. It will leave you wanting more. Pure genius. A must read for any lover or newcomer of crime fiction. I give it 5 STARS!
The Swifts: A Gallery of Rogues is the second book in the series of The Swifts by Beth Lincoln. This book is a crime fiction about a group of children who happen to all find themselves in Paris solving a crime. The Swifts most valuable item, 'Clown Laments His Lot In Life' has been stolen, so the children make a decision to travel to their enemy relatives in search of the stolen artifact.
A Gallery of Rogues is such a captivating read because it has all the events you would want in a novel for kids: comedy, suspense, crime (mostly comedy though). I’m fond of crime novels, so this book is exactly what I've been craving. My favourite character is Pomme, she's smart, artsy and interesting to read about as well. I love both of The Swifts books; I commend the author for excellent and engaging writing.
Engaging, enthralling and entertaining. It will leave you wanting more. Pure genius!. A must read for any lover or newcomer of crime fiction.
I give it 5 STARS!
A great detective story, which is fun to read for children and adults alike.
After reading the first Swift book and thoroughly enjoying it, I was excited to read this sequel with my daughter, who is 10. We were not disappointed. This is a great detective mystery for young readers. A good story. Brilliant characters. A few beautiful illustrations to help tell the story along the way, and a good balance of humour too.
The story is set mostly in Paris, France, with the main character called Shenanigan Swift setting out to solve the mystery. The famous criminal gang Ouvolpo have set their target on the Swift house, and swapped a valuable painting for nothing other than an inflatable bird! Shenanigan is immediately on the case. Together with her cousins, the Martinets, they set to work to solve the crime.
A great detective story, which is fun to read for children and adults alike. The plot keeps you engaged and interested, turning the pages to find out what happens next. Highly recommend this series to any detective loving children, especially those who love Murder Most Unladylike, the Violet Veil Mysteries or the Mysteries on Trains series by MG Leonard and Sam Sedgeway.
The Swifts, A Gallery of Rogues is a fun, French mystery.
This is the sequel to a book I hadn't read but that didn't matter, I still really enjoyed it! It was set in Paris and I enjoyed learning some French words as I read about the mystery! It was a bit complicated sometimes but I think that is because the story is long so you had to keep reading it to remember all the characters and what was happening. There are quite a few long words which I didn't mind as you get to find out what they mean. I thought it was funny though, especially when they swapped the famous picture and stole it from the gallery! I would recommend it, especially if someone reads it to you so they can help with some of the words.
A challenging read, but worth the effort, fun, different and exciting for all ages. Teens would enjoy this just as much as my 10 year old did.
I read this to my 10 year old son after we thoroughly enjoyed the first Swifts books.
I would say it is aimed at children of at least 10, there are a lot of "big" words, lots of interesting names and general themes that may need to be explained. As it is set in Paris, there's also a lot of French phrases peppered throughout.
It's quite a complex story to follow, with lots of strands to keep track of, and some quite dark themes for sensitive children - murder, concealment, lies and deception all feature!
There's also a gentle LGBTQ undercurrent running through the books, with Erf, and later further characters. It's a nice way of introducing different pronouns and relationships without making a big deal of it.
Overall, it's a great book, but a long and slightly challenging read for independent readers.
We look forward to a 3rd book!
I couldn’t put the book down so it’s really exciting to see what was gonna happen next.
We really enjoyed the first series of The Swifts. In this story, it’s about a famous criminal gang ouvolpo. They target the Swift house and take an expensive painting for exploding inflatable bird.
Two sides of the family have to come together when they find a body at the scene of ouvolpo robbery. They have to work together to solve the crime Shenanigan has to go to France, Paris, where she meets her eccentric French cousins.
I really enjoyed reading this book as it’s like a mystery detective storyline. There’s loads of illustrations in the story and the book is really amazing to read. The cover of the book is very appealing and colourful I couldn’t put the book down so it’s really exciting to see what was gonna happen next. The story flowed really well so it’s very easy to read. My mind was going everywhere as I was reading it. There are a lot of new characters in the book, but it all went well together that made the story really interesting.
Really funny book, I enjoyed this book so much, it's funny, very interesting and now one of my favourites.
Wow, I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh so much, it made me want to keep on reading, I didn't want to put the book down. If you like reading, I would say you would love this book.
If you liked the first Swifts book, you’ll definitely love The Gallery of Rogues
I just finished The Swifts: Gallery of Rogues, and it was even better than the first book! Shenanigan Swift is back, and this time, the story takes her on another wild adventure. In this book, Shenanigan finds herself mixed up in a mystery at a strange art gallery filled with suspicious and sneaky people (or "rogues," as they call them).
What I loved most about this book was how Shenanigan’s cleverness and bravery shine even more. The mystery was so much fun to follow, and there were a lot of new twists that I didn’t expect. I really liked the way Shenanigan worked with her sisters and new characters to figure out who was behind the trouble at the gallery.
The story was full of action, and I liked how each rogue had their own secrets. There were funny moments too, which made me laugh out loud! The art gallery setting was really cool and made the mystery feel even more exciting. Plus, the illustrations in the book are amazing and helped me picture all the quirky characters and clues.
If you liked the first Swifts book, you’ll definitely love The Gallery of Rogues. It’s funny, exciting, and full of surprises! I really hope there will be more adventures with Shenanigan and her family because I’m not ready for it to end!
Full of mystery and wonder that keeps you guessing
I thought this was a really good book I would recommend this to anyone 10-14 years old. I was so surprised it had a lot of plot twists. My favourite character was Shenanigan she was really fun and excitable. My favourite part on this book was when the Swifts went to the hotel Martinet for the first time. I also think it was good because you could sort of solve the mystery along with the characters because you are only getting the information that they get.
This book is full of mystery, fun and suspicion. It did take me a long time to read this book but I am pleased that I stuck with it.
This book is full of mystery, fun and suspicion. The characters are really well thought about and they kept on surprising me. Shenanigan is still my favourite as she has no fear. I have learnt lots of new vocabulary from this book which I have found very interesting. The story made me laugh out loud. It did take me a long time to read this book but I am pleased that I stuck with it.
