Very unusual story but definitely worth a read.
I found this a bit strange at first, but once I just accepted it and went with the flow I loved it.
The characters of Gala and Natalie are great. I love their friendship. I love the fact that both of them in different ways are struggling to talk but are still able to communicate with each other.
The way that words are described in this story is great. Depending on how the person who is saying them feels or says them makes the words change font style and colour, some of them even being glittery.
The story is a really good one too, basically saying that it is a good idea to watch what is going on around you and notice things, because things aren’t always what they seem and everyone has their own stories and things going on in their lives. It talks about school lives and addresses bullying in different ways and how it can make people feel, but not just the bullied person, the bully themselves as well, which I don’t think gets talked about enough. There is usually a reason for someone’s actions.
I really enjoyed this book and I would read another by this author.
Gala joins a new school, and struggles to communicate until she makes a new friend. Together, they find an unusual way to use words to help others until someone hijacks their plans.
I really enjoyed this book because it is set in a world similar to ours just with one big difference: words appear when people speak them. This makes it really interesting because it alters the way people communicate. Gala has recently moved from Cadaques - in Spain - to Scotland to live with her dad and his new boyfriend. Gala joins a new school, and struggles to understand everyone as she isn't used to speaking English. Gala makes a friend who also finds communication difficult but, together, they find an unusual way to use words to help others. But when someone hijacks their plans and people’s feelings are hurt, the innocent friends find the finger pointing at them. It is a really great book and I would definitely recommend it to people who like books with intrigue and a tense mystery to solve
The complex yet easily-flowing plot is compelling, intriguing and fun to unleash readers' inner detective skills.
As Gala discovers the strange new Scottish world, so distant from her cherished Spanish home, she is unprepared to face the challenges of a foreign land, a new language and another school — a place filled with unforeseen words that ignite her inner creativity.
However, when feeling lost, alone and unable to express her true self, a classmate with selective mutism helps her to explore new possibilities after being befriended. Within a whirlwind of words that hold deep emotion, the pair find an importance in using others' speech to make a positive change: a difference: a new hope.
Consequently, their peers find joy in the anticipation of receiving a beacon-of-hope from the anonymous creators. Unfortunately, this euphoria causes pure mayhem for the imaginative two; a sleuth exploits the girl's hobby: jealousy is poisonous.
Sabotage.
Will they find a way to clear their names and continue investigating their passions?
This all-inclusive novel strongly conveys the author's intention of shining a light on the unseen and everyday struggles caused by communication differences and difficulties. The obstacles that these characters face are often quietly forgotten by society; we find out if Gala will settle in her new life: connect with new people, despite the linguistic and cultural barrier.
I would recommend this book to creative readers looking for new insights, aged 9 +. The complex yet easily-flowing plot is compelling, intriguing and fun to unleash readers' inner detective skills. The narrated style demonstrates how the protagonist feels, then displays how thoughts translate into action...
This book was great. It showed me what it would be like to go to school in a country when I cannot speak the language and how difficult it must be for non-English speakers. I couldn’t put this book down!
The book has been my favourite out of all the books I have received so far!
It tells the story of two girls- one who is a non-English speaker from Catalan who moves to Scotland and the other- a girl who has selective mutism.
My favourite thing about this book is the way it is written- it is structured really well representing what it feels like to not understand the language with squiggly lines ~~~~~ as if it is just all mumbled jumbled up words coming out because she is not English.
I sympathised with the character and it made me think about children in my school.
A very unusual story but definitely worth the read. It had me hooked after only reading the first page.

The world inside the book is very much just like ours. However, people can see words as they are said. In some cases, this can help people like Gala learn English and better understand others, but can also ruin someone’s master plan.
After Gala moves from Spain to Scotland she has to learn to speak English, settle down at a new school and make friends. She has her heart set on returning to her home in Spain until she meets someone who completely changes her negative mindset. Gala and Natalie have a strong friendship and bonded over the fact that they both can’t speak English very well (Gala having it as her second language and Natalie with selective mutism). Together they form a plan to brighten peoples’ day, but it completely backfires on them and they end up in huge trouble. Will they take the blame or do all it takes to find out who framed them?
I really enjoyed this book as it is a mystery and keeps you hooked all the way through. I would definitely recommend this book to readers aged 9+ years. If you are looking for a mysterious tale and are ready to release your inner detective, you should try this book. You won’t regret reading it and you won’t be able to put it down.
