A search for a lost kitten that taps into many children’s keen desire for a pet. For anyone that knows a child that desperately wants a pet, 11 year-old Tempest and her 8 year-old brother Wallace will be easily identifiable characters. Told no by their parents but still determined, Tempest hears a kitten stuck up in a tree and decides secretly keeping him is the answer to showing her parents that they’re responsible for a cat. But when the cat gets out, the mystery of his whereabouts begins. This story is both filled with information that is important when getting and looking after a kitten, but also ultimately is about being honest and doing the right thing. The illustrations throughout bring key moments of the story to life for young readers. This is an entertaining story for anyone who loves animals and mysteries with brave independent main characters.
Hi, my name is Tempest. I'm 11, short and skinny. I have thick, brown hair. I look like a broomstick upside down. Wallace is my jumpy, happy little brother; he's 8. We dream of having a pet, but Mum and Dad keep saying no. Last Sunday, Wallace and I rescued a kitten stuck in a tree. He had no tag or collar: we named him Pompon. I decided to keep him a secret from Mum and Dad, for just a few days, to prove to them that I could take care of a pet on my own. When I came back from school the next day, Pompon had disappeared. I started investigating right away. I followed a mysterious old man to a strange factory over the River Thames, but Mum called me back home before I could find out more. Back home, clues pointed to Manie, our eccentric grandmother who knew about Pompon—could she have betrayed us? Looking for my cat, I even climbed onto Manie’s balcony and nearly broke my neck, only to face an axe murderer. (Spoiler: not really; it was a lovely granny chopping lamb for dinner.) In two days, I’ve rescued a kitten, kept it secret, lost it, faced scary strangers, and had to brave my fears. Who took Pompon? Did I manage to solve the mystery and save my kitten? You’ll have to read my story to find out.
