"An impossible encounter leads to adventures 70 years in the past."
When Geraldine Winkleton a.k.a Winkie arrives in Kate’s garden, it sparks a time-slip adventure. Discovering they live near each other, just 70 years apart, Kate heads with Winkie back to The Towers boarding school to see the truth for herself. What follows is a nostalgic and charming historical fiction as Kate immerses herself in boarding school and 1950’s life.
This is an easy to read and entertaining story that, much like the other books I’ve read from Tony White, Doppelganger and Just Kicking a Ball? Are filled with a cast of strong female characters. We see that while some aspects of 1950s boarding school is what we’d expect (rationing, no phones, bad school dinners) there’s a lot of fun to be had and new things to discover, like animal dissection and cheese chasing. This is a bright and joyful story that also provides some historical insight into how girls were brought up 70 years ago. The story had a nostalgic feel and reminded me of the boarding school stories I read when I was 11/12. Although I would have liked to see Winkie experience 2022 too, the focus of the narrative being in the past gives it a wholesome and traditional feel that is really easy to slip into and enjoy. The Towers School is another entertaining story from Tony white that readers aged 9-11 will enjoy.
