"Goal! A brilliant against the odds story about the creation of a girls football team that will entertain any football fan."
It’s 1970, the World Cup is playing in Mexico and Julia Wilson, aged 11 is keen to set up her own girls football team at her Primary School. With the encouragement of parents, her teacher Miss Temple and the Headmaster Mr Hopkins, once Julia has the players they put together everything else they’ll need: shirts, socks, goals and another team to play. The hard work is just beginning when they have their first game against rival school St. Matthews and their biased refereeing.
An easy to read short stories perfect for football fans. Telling the story from Julia’s perspective, her passion for football, her enthusiasm for making a team and working hard to win shines through the page. She is a very determined main character that I think that young children will enjoy meeting. This is also a great story about friendship, teamwork, resilience and hard work, as the Greengate Rangers triumph in adversity to build a successful girls football team, when such a thing wasn’t as common as it is today.
A really entertaining read that will have you cheering from the sidelines, and wholeheartedly invested until the final whistle blows.
