This is a sweet, humorous 16-page children’s book. Each page has a beautiful illustration and a few lines of text. Harold is a young boy who is having trouble hearing what everyone is saying. This is quite a problem as what he does hear, does not make sense to him and he often gets the wrong idea about what other people tell him. He mishears the librarian and his teacher, and this provides some amusing situations. The funniest situation is when Harold’s mom bakes a Bundt cake, but Harold thinks she has made a “butt” cake”. Young children will agree with Harold that this is indeed a very strange type of cake to want to make, and they’ll get quite a laugh from that! Harold is also unclear when he is speaking and others don’t understand what he is trying to say! Luckily Harold’s dad realizes that Harold needs a trip to the ear clinic. Read the book to find out what the problem with Harold’s ears was and if it could easily be sorted out. A bonus for readers is that on the last page, the author explains what a Bundt cake is and also provides a recipe to try. I’m sure children from about age 3 to 6 or 7 will love this entertaining book!
But what he mishears is hilarious and will have your child laughing out loud. Follow along this Early Reader for a day in the life of Harold and his mishearing ears. At the center of it all is the mysterious BUTT cake - or, rather, Bundt cake. Harold has no idea why mom would even make that.
When, at last, Harold is able to hear properly again, will he even want to? "Eggs use me!" I might be giving away the ending. Read along with your child as Harold mishears and mis-says everything from the schoolyard to the dinner table. Kids find it hilarious and parents giggle at the double-meanings.
Harold Heard even includes a make-at-home recipe for Bundt cake you can try with your kids!
