I enjoyed this beautifully illustrated children’s picture book featuring 4-year Cara as the main character. The book emits a riot of rainbow colours, starting with the cover page! This imaginative, sensitive book has 8 stories, all about 6 pages long. I loved the expressive, descriptive words the authors use like “splashy puddles”, “gooey sand” and “crispy leaf storm”. The illustrations are sweet and gentle. In the first story, Cara and her Granddad go singing and splashing around in puddles in their Wellington boots. Thereafter, Cara has conversations with Mountain, Wave, Sunflower, Wind, Butterfly, Bee, and Crystal, while her stories are beautifully depicted in rainbow hues. In the last story, she sees how the crystal pendant reflects pretty rainbow colours. She learns that even though we (as illustrated by the elements of nature she meets) are all different, we have similarities. We are more alike than we are different. The book imparts subtle messages without preaching, for example, children shouldn’t talk to strangers and the fact that the earth moves around the sun. The book has a warm, positive, dreamy atmosphere. I would recommend it to children from about 4 to 6 years old. Adults can entertain children with one story or a few at a time.
