"A beautiful, philosophical, child-centred story of friendship, the search for answers to big questions, and the joy of shared experiences."
Timeless and philosophical, Together is one of those special picture books that speaks to all ages. Exploring the joy of friendship, and the infinite quest to find answers to big questions, Daphne Deckers’ text is at once beautifully evocative and compellingly measured, while Joey Holthaus’ illustrations conjure emotional states quite exquisitely.
While Lev loves witnessing the fiery sunrise, he wishes he had someone to share the experience with: “If you couldn’t share it with someone, how could you know it wasn’t all just in your mind?” He tries to share the moment with a pair of fluttering butterflies, but they vanish from view, leaving Lev wondering “where you went when you disappear”, along with other weighty questions. In fact, “He often felt like he was looking for something, but he wasn’t sure what. He wanted to figure it out”.
Then Lev meets Levi, and together they fashion a friend from the sand, and from leaves, branches and stone, each time working through finding answers to some of life’s big questions, realising — together — that searching for answers through shared experiences tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow is one of life’s biggest joys. This is storytelling at its most soul-stirring.
