Written and illustrated by Fabiola Anchorena, Waiting for the Dawn tells a poignant tale of forest fires and renewal that will cast a stirring spell over swathes of readers, adults included. It’s a wonderful conversation-starting book to share at home, or in a classroom context.
The story is powerfully poetic, and told from the perspective of animals whose Amazonian habitats have been rendered sunless, moonless and rainless. In these pages, as the spectacular illustrations shift from darkness to burnished orange, we witness creatures of both day and night — creatures that swim, soar, roar and scuttle — ponder what’s happened to their home.
Then comes a nourishing downpour and the palette shifts to fresh rainforest tones suffused in light. And so the animals, among them anteaters, macaws, toucans and sloths, “celebrate the return of the yellow of the sun”.
Featuring educational information on forest fires, framed in the context of those that raged through Brazil, Peru and Bolivia in 2019, and later that year across Australia, a tree will be planted for each copy sold of this potent story for our times.

About
Waiting for The Dawn Synopsis
This book plants one tree for every purchase.
The sun, the moon, and the rain have not been seen in the jungle for weeks, and everything is shrouded in a prolonged night. The animals of the Amazon forest, both diurnal and nocturnal - whether they run, fly, or swim, whether they roar or squawk - are deeply concerned. They no longer recognize their home and embark on a journey to discover why the dawn has not come.
Through the poetic text and the emotive use of colour, Waiting for the Dawn draws our attention to the dire consequences of the Amazon's exploitation and destruction, a phenomenon that has escalated in recent years due to the effects of climate change and tragically makes headlines each summer.
Educational backmatter created in collaboration with One Tree Planted will inspire both adults and children to contemplate the growing threat of forest fires and support organizations that protect the forests, which are the Earth's lungs. Velum pages allow readers to peel back layers for a tactile experience. The cover boasts fluorescent Pantone foil accents, a cloth spine that wraps around, and black sprayed edges.
