I enjoyed this sweet and gentle 20-page story about a preteen girl rescuing a stray kitten. Kathy often finds stray animals and takes them to the vet so that they can get the care they need. This time she finds a stray kitten and takes a particular interest in her. She nurses her back to health and then asks her mom if they can keep her. It is the author's intention for children and caregivers to discuss pet ownership and what the responsibilities are. She offers a few guidelines for discussion at the start of the book and delicately paves the way without going into huge detail. Each page has sufficient rhyming words to keep children’s attention and is followed by a lovely illustration depicting the story. The little kitten’s facial expressions are particularly sweet. The illustrations draw you in and further encourage discussion. I recommend this useful book. Even if your family is not looking into owning a pet, the discussions that arise from the story will increase vocabulary around pet ownership and result in valuable lessons for children.
