"This wonderfully whimsical picture book celebrates the power of words as it invites little ones to definitely NOT giggle at a gaggle of funny phrases."
A treat to read aloud to hear little ones erupt in uncontrollable giggles as they invent their own fabulously funny words, Frances Tosdevin’s Do Not Say These Words is a sidesplittingly silly interactive story that rejoices in the amusing impact of particular words.
The situation is serious — “Certain words are making children giggle. Giggling produces giggle-gas. And giggle-gas is bad for the planet. With too much giggle-gas in the air, terrible things will happen ...”
But fear not — The Professor narrator of this story has a solution. “Dangerous, gigglesome words are BANNED”, plus she has a “machine that makes funny, world-wobbling words into boring, unfunny words”. So, for example, the word “bottom” is banned” and replaced with “FLOPPY PEACH-CHEEKS”, and “fart” is outlawed in favour of “SMELLY-SPURTLE”.
While The Professor declares all the machine’s alternatives to be “absolutely NOT FUNNY. At all”, little ones listening to the story will, of course, be giggling like nobody’s business, and delightedly answering her request for help: “Reader, I need YOUR help. The future of our planet depends on it! Can you think of sensible, boring, totally UNFUNNY words to replace these? EARWAX. HAIRY TOES. BURP”.
