October 2023 Graphic Novel of the Month
Oh my! Pedro Martin’s Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir serves a sumptuous feast of soul- warming family love and revolutionary family history, as revealed through a life-changing road-trip that see young Pedro connect with his Abuelito to find his voice, and a new sense of self. Deriving from the hugely popular Mexikid online comic, this coming-of-age beaut translates to the page in vibrant, engaging style.
Pedro is a Mexikid, a child born in America to Mexican parents. A boy who’s grown up hearing stories of how his crime-fighting Abuelito lived through the Mexican Revolution. But when Pedro hears his granddad is coming to live with his family in California, Pedro has big questions. First up, how will he fit in their already-crowded house? Secondly, as Pedro addresses a photo of Abuelito: “What’s so important that you need us to come ALL THE WAY TO MEXICO just to bring you back HERE?”
Nonetheless, Pedro and his family make the epic 2000-mile road trip to collect Abuelito, and it’s a journey that sees him transformed — through the zany escapades and heartache experienced along the way, and through spending time with the remarkable man at the heart of the trip.
A delight of perfectly-pitched, multi-layered wisdom, fun and energy, Mexikid is incredibly rewarding to re-read, to uncover more jokes, more heart, and more meaning. Sumptuously characterful, super-colourful, and luminously quirky, I loved it.
