"A camping adventure turns into the brave rescue attempts of an illegal puppy farm."
Available from The Book Dragon.
The Boy Who Dared by Rachel Coverdale sees the newly formed trio of friends, James, Ahmed and Greg all set off for a camping holiday in Wales. With plans to learn orienteering and tracking polecats the holiday takes a more dangerous turn after the discovery of an illegal puppy farm. Determined to gather as much evidence as possible and rescue the dogs, the boys find themselves at risk. Will they be able to work together to save one another, gather evidence and raise the alarm.
This book is the second in ‘The Boy Who Couldn’t’ series. The events of the first book that saw Greg join James and Ahmed’s friendship group are mentioned throughout this book and while it’s not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one, for those wanting to start reading about the boys’ adventures from the beginning, start with The Boy Who Couldn’t. The narrative is told from the perspectives of James, Ahmed and Greg, with each character having their own distinctive voice and narrative style. Also spread throughout the book are well-drawn black and white illustrations of the boys and their mission. This is an exciting, action-packed story of bravery and self-discovery that also interweaves a love of nature, animals and the outdoors. With plenty of scope for more books from the trio, this is a series that I think would appeal to many middle grade adventure readers.
