LoveReading4Kids Says
A power collection of 50 poems from 10 debut poets, put together by the 2022-24 Children’s Laureate, Joseph Coelho. Working in collaboration with spoken word champions, Apples & Snakes, Coelho has selected 10 exciting and fresh poets from diverse and under- represented backgrounds, to create a unique and original anthology.
The range of topics covered, and poetry styles utilised is impressive. From video-games to racist bullying, giant snowmen to ableism, Spin! takes us on a journey through many different perspectives and experiences whilst maintaining a sense of unity.
The sometimes simple, always evocative poems shine with authenticity and attention to details. Dealing with big and small issues; there are moments of huge joy, small embarrassments, and poignant reflection. A personal favourite was ‘Nana Hijinks Assembly’, for its outright joy and the clever way it kindly looks at the self-consciousness of youth.
There are poems full of nuance, sensory poems to make your mouth water, and many poems that celebrate family, community, and heritage. All have a lot to say, whilst remaining impressively accessible to young readers. This is a collection that can be enjoyed independently or shared with others, in fact many of the poems included will be a gift to those planning school assemblies. A welcome addition to any poetry collection.
