Maya wakes up early to find the door to her rabbit’s hutch is open and that Pooey the rabbit is nowhere to be seen. She decides to keep this a secret from her parents and her cousins, Tanya and Anya, there for the day. Surely, with the help of her lively, if somewhat easily distracted Mind, she’ll be able to find her missing pet before anyone notices.
An action-packed day follows, as Maya follows clues and trails of poo, but feels increasingly guilty. All the time, Mind, the voice in her head that we all have, here personified and represented in the lovely black and white illustrations as a separate entity, offers suggestions, sometimes helpful and calming, sometimes not so much.
The story is warm and funny, rooted in real family life, while the role played by Mind offers a chance for children to think about the mind and the way it works, as Sunita Chawdhary says, ‘in all its magnificence and its mischiefs!’
