LoveReading4Kids Says
Kenneth Steven’s tender story of a boy healed through an encounter with a wild animal is a moving demonstration of the transformative power of love and of nature.
Douglas is grieving his mother who died just a year ago, school is difficult, and his father is suffering just as much, while the approach of Christmas only adds to their sadness. But Douglas’ discovery of an injured greylag goose changes things. Not only does caring for Silverwing give Douglas a focus, it brings him closer to his father, and reveals new connections to his mother too.
Douglas finds an outlet for his feelings through art, drawing painstaking charcoal portraits of Silverwing, and even when the bird rejoins the other wild geese, we understand that Douglas has developed a new strength and a resilience that will remain with him forever. Set in Argyll in the depths of winter, this is deeply moving but filled with moments of tangible joy; the sort of story that remains with readers for a long time.
This is a book to recommend to fans of Gill Lewis, another author who understands the power of nature to heal and forge connections.

About
Silverwing Synopsis
A beautiful story about ten-year-old Douglas who has recently lost his mother to cancer. The boy and his father haven't been able to communicate since her death, and the house is a place of sadness.
One day Douglas finds an injured Greylag goose and so begins their mission to nurse the bird, and themselves, back to health. As father and son work together and start talking together again, they discover much more about Douglas' mother than they ever knew before and connect with each other on a deeper level.
The story deals with bereavement, school bullies, father-son connection, and the enormously healing power of nature and art. Illustrated with gorgeous drawings throughout, this is a story that will stay with you even after you close the book.
