There are also two narrators in this story, separated by a hundred years in which the world has changed forever. The aptly named Phoenix lives in a terrifying near future ravaged by climate change and facing a global pandemic which attacks children like him.

Shelby lives in a world following the climate-based disasters caused by earlier generation and where, based on scientific analysis of the ability of the land to support human life, each community is exactly three hundred and fifty people sustainably subsisting on just seven hundred hectares allowing ‘honoured’ nature beyond their fences to rewild and recover.

Both children are alike in their curiosity to explore beyond their boundaries and their stories gradually interweave in a brilliantly gripping mix of mythology and sci-fi. Phoenix and his little brother Walter are cryogenically frozen to await a cure for the virus and Shelby eventually finds the long-abandoned pods now fatally deteriorating.

But as the reader is all too aware, in trying to rescue Phoenix, Shelby could reignite a terrible danger for the world. Yet what emerges from this all too timely tale is a vision of hope for the future as seen by the young people who will have to fight for it. Seamlessly lyrical writing, fascinating and credible world building and characters who burrow their way into your heart make this an unforgettable read which will have huge appeal to readers, many of whom will share the author’s environmental concerns.
