High Street Smells

A busy street is a public library of smells -
the coffee grinder's fresh aroma at the corner,
the baker's sweet, buttery perfume -
you can almost taste the rolls, pastries,
and drink the toasted coffee on the morning air.

These are 'poems for young people' by a world-renowned poet, illustrated with amusing sympathy by Sonia Lawson, R.A. Brought up on Tyneside, James Kirkup has lived in many parts of the world, especially Japan and Andorra. Some of the poems incorporate Japanese legends and haiku, others are about friends, teachers, kittens, dreams and trains. There is also a wonderful sequence on scarecrows.
