Following the release of A Story about Ducks and A Railway ABC, both of which were a major hit with Lovereading4kids members and browsers, V&A Publishing has rediscovered two more touching stories by the inimitable author and artist Jack Townend, Ben and Jenny the Jeep. Ben is the story of a lonely but hard-working steamroller who yearns for love. Can you guess what Ben does when he finds it in this sweet and endearing love story full of delightful lithographs to accompany the text.
All four children's books have been lovingly restored for their first printing since the Second World War.
Ben tells the story of a lonely steamroller. Ben loves to work hard for Mr Dodie but, at night, when he is all alone, pools of tears collect beneath his boiler. He is lonely and yearns for brothers and sisters. One day Ben looks across a field and sees a puff of white smoke. Overwhelmed with happiness, he hastily rushes to meet steamroller Matilda, and the pair agree to run away together.
Jack townend (1918 - 2005) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and later taught at the Ruskin School of Art where he tutored, among others, Shirley Hughes. In 1948 Townend was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
