Winner of the Older Readers Category (12-16 Years) Scottish Children’s Book Award 2013 - March 2013 Debut of the Month A truly moving, epic love story, that's exciting, scary, funny, thought-provoking and utterly original from a debut author with a very bright future ahead of her. Definitely for 14+ year olds.
A Piece of Passion from the Editor, Helen Boyle
We're extremely excited to be publishing Claire McFall's debut novel Ferryman on the Templar Fiction list.
For me it's a book that has it all: a brooding love story beautifully written, a perilous journey that will keep you awake at night and, in Tristan, a hero who's as wild as Heathcliffe, as aloof as Mr Darcy and as desirable as Edward.
I was drawn into Dylan's story from the very first chapter. Claire's writing is fresh and modern, she's a brilliant storyteller and her characters read like real teenagers.
I hope you love Ferryman as much as I do.

About
Ferryman Synopsis
Ferryman by Scottish newcomer and teacher Claire McFall is an epic love story and adventure like no other. It combines the compulsive horror of The Hunger Games with a love story against the odds to rival Twilight. When teenage girl Dylan leaves her Scottish home to visit an estranged father she hardly knows, she is involved in a train crash. Emerging onto a remote hillside, she is met by a strange but handsome teenage boy called Tristan. He is her ‘ferryman,’ sent to accompany her across the wasteland, the divide between life and the after-life. So begins a journey where Dylan will learn about herself and what she is capable of; an epic love story against the odds and a personal odyssey, in a dark world haunted by ‘wraiths’ – the howling demons sent to suck souls down to the depths and final, eternal death.

About Claire McFall
Claire McFall grew up just south of Glasgow in the heart of Celtic and Rangers country, and she now teaches English to teenagers in Peebles, Scotland where she lives.
Claire's work is, in essence, all about first love and difficult decisions. Her novels take romantic narratives and engaging characters and hurl them into unusual and extreme settings. She then explores her characters’ reactions to these unfamiliar situations and the new and confusing feelings that beset them in a hyper-real, engaging, deeply poignant and literary manner. She is fascinated by teenagers and what makes them tick and by the transforming power of love.
