A World Book Day 'Recommended Read' for 2011
This is a brilliant tale of revolution, of adventure that will hook readers from the very first page. With plot twists that you’re never expecting, wonderful characters that jump off the page and some rather weird and wonderful humour , this ‘steampunk’ adventure is set aboard the huge ship-city Worldshaker, where the elite live on the top decks while the 'Filthies' toil below, powering the massive engines. Col lives on the upper deck and he has been chosen as next Supreme Commander but when one of the ‘filthies’, a girl, a bit younger than him escapes and hides in his room Col is forced to make a shattering decision that will change the lives of everyone on board. His safe, elite world is about to fall apart.
A message from the author's editor at Templar:
"Already an experienced fantasy writer, Richard's incredible imagination has constructed an alternative history where, after the revolution and respression, Europe has become a wasteland and the great powers roam the earth in giant juggernauts. The ruling elite live in comfort on the top decks, while the 'filthies' power the giant engines down 'below'. Richard's style of writing really brought the characters alive for me, capturing the stuffy formality of the top decks and the sweat and grime of 'below'. Even better there's a sequel on the way!"
That sequel is out now and it's called Liberator - click here !

About Richard Harland
Richard Harland was born in the north of England in the middle of the coldest
winter ever recorded. He moved to Australia on a university scholarship, fell in love
with it and stayed. Richard loves writing fantasy and science fiction for adults and
children, and has won five Aurealis awards for his novels, the Wolf Kingdom
quartet and The Black Crusade, and for his short stories.
Richard always had plenty of ideas for fantasy novels, but fell into a bad case of writer's block that lasted 25 years. he admits to having 30 unfinished manuscripts still lying in the bottom cupboard.
Richard says, ‘Worldshaker came from a dream in which I fell through a slot in the
ground, down past endless floors of machinery, metal pipes and impossibly
cramped living spaces. It took me fifteen years to develop all the details of the
world inspired by that glimpse. By the time I finally sat down to write, the story
was just bursting to come out.’
The concluding part of Worldshaker, Liberator took rather less time to write. In fact it came out in a 6 month rush. Richard Says, 'I love the downhill toboggan ride when a story and characters take charge and carry me along. It always happens when I get close to the climax of a novel, but with Liberator it began before I was even halfway through. What a ride!'
