In the final poem in this intensely personal collection, entitled Post-Pandemic, are the lines, ‘Things are supposed to be normal now. / We are supposed to be normal now.’ They’re striking in their simplicity and the way they underline the abnormality of the pandemic and its continuing impact on every one of us.
Nyanda Foday’s experience of those years of lockdown and isolation was particularly hard; alone at university, separated from her family, struggling with her mental health. Her poetry captures the anguish, fear and loneliness of her situation, her struggles to keep in control.
There’s a power to the poems driven by their raw honesty; a potent emphasis on physicality in poems such as Self-Soothing and Body. During lockdown Nyanda was at university. She chose to stay in her student accommodation rather than going home to her family. She spent 79 days alone, with deteriorating mental health, trying to study for her degree.

Nyanda Foday was Birmingham's Young Poet Laureate 2016-2018, and is inspired by the impact that words can have to create, unite, explain and enjoy. She strives to connect with others where she can by sharing and listening to others' work. Her parents moved from Sierra Leone to London before having Nyanda. Bookworms is Nyanda's debut picture book.
