April 2023 Book of the Month
Buzzing with the inspirational, inclusive message that it’s pretty darn fine to “bee” yourself, Mo O'Hara’s Honey’s Hive launches a new series in animated style. Entertaining, adventurous and reassuring through a fab cast of characters and rousing messages, Honey’s Hive has all the hallmarks of classic illustrated fiction for younger readers, plus splendid illustrations by Aya Kakeda, and a honey-sweet dollop of originality.
Honey bee has a habit of being dramatic, and a tendency to procrastinate and dream. For example, when she’s supposed to be studying hive history, her mind wanders to imagining herself as the queen of an ancient Egyptian beehive. At least she has the Bee Code to help ground her, with its “find your place in the hive” principle coming in especially handy. After discovering she’s not suited to being a larvae nurse, Honey thinks she’s found her place in the hive when she’s assigned to look after the Queen bee, no less.
Then, when trouble strikes, Honey saves the day with help from her friends, thus demonstrating that the success of a hive is dependent on bees working together as a community. In the process, Honey also discovers her true calling as a scout bee adventurer in a cheering conclusion that will leave 7+-year-olds un-bee-lievably eager to waggle dance into her next adventure!

About
Honey's Hive Synopsis
Honey is a young bee buzzing with ambition, who can't find her role in her small hive. Just when she thinks she's found a job she likes, a swarm threatens the whole hive! Honey makes her escape, and discovers a rooftop paradise at the top of a tower block - the perfect place to set up a new hive. Fighting off a swarm of angry wasps, and working together with her friends, Honey saves the day and builds a new home for her and her community!
The first book in an exciting new series from New York Times bestseller Mo O'Hara, packed with bee facts and stunning illustrations by Aya Kakeda.
Also available in the series: Honey's Hive: Be a Friend
‘I am absolutely buzzing about Honey’s Hive. I’ve always been fascinated by bees. They live in such a complex society, but how do they know what they are supposed to do? And what if there was a bee who didn’t know what kind of bee to be? I’ve certainly felt like that, and I think lots of kids feel like that at one time or another. Honey’s Hive is a book about being who you want to be; it’s ok to just ‘bee yourself’ and that’s what Honey and her friends learn. They also have lots of adventures along the way with rival queen bees and attacking wasps.
While I was researching Honey’s Hive I was lucky enough to speak with one of the beekeepers at Bee Urban in South London and even got to go to their apiary for an afternoon. The beekeeper told me that the different hives really had different personalities; some were quite chilled (one with a queen imported from New Zealand was especially laid back) and some were more in your face (one with a local queen from Deptford wasn’t taking any buzz from anyone). Bees are so important for our ecosystem and yet are so vulnerable to climate change, pollution, toxic agricultural practices and our own negligence. It definitely made me want to do my bit to help.’ Mo O’Hara
