Like lots of little children, Ida notices things other people don’t, including the big Hedge Lion who lives in her garden, ‘very still, and very quiet, and very hedgy’.
Ida is determined to help him find his roar and does so with real success; in fact, the lion’s roar is so loud it scares all the birds and insects that live in its mane. Together, the friends work out a way for the lion to let out his roars, before they get too big.
Beautifully told and splendidly illustrated, the lion picked out in gorgeous splashes of golden yellow, this is a delicate examination of friendship and understanding, and a lovely celebration of a young child’s imagination too.

Ida sees Hedge Lion every day on her walk around town. Hedge Lion wants everyone to think he's a hedge. Nobody's scared of hedges. But Ida is brave, she notices things that other people don't, and she's not fooled. She knows Hedge Lion is a lion, she just needs to help him find his roar. Along the way, Ida learns to be patient and kind, and Hedge Lion learns to be brave and confident.
Robyn Wilson-Owen graduated from the Cambridge MA in Children's Book Illustration in 2019 with Distinction, having previously trained in Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art. She worked as a set, costume and puppet designer for a decade before turning her hand to children's book illustration. Her work has been shortlisted for the Batsford Prize in 2018 and the Searle Award for Creativity in 2019.
