In a word: magic. Finbar Hawkins’ myth-infused Stone casts an unforgettable spell. Lucidly poetic, its bone-deep evocation of a boy’s grief for his father speaks to the heart in wonderful, accessible ways that will resonate with a huge range of readers.

While tormented by grief, and guilt over the last words he spoke to his deceased dad, Sam finds a stone that seems to make strange things happen, not least when he visits the legend-steeped hillside near his home. Then, as Sam’s mum and sister implore him to open up, enchanting, tarot-reading Oona explains that the stone is a scrying stone, as used by witches “to tell the future, to read the past… to open other worlds”.

With Halloween approaching, a time “when all that’s dead returns to the earth”, to quote Oona, Sam opens up to a man who’s struggling with the death of his wife, and opens his heart to find reconciliation and the beginnings of peace.

Honest and profound on the pain of loss and the magic of unexpected healing, Stone is a heart-achingly beautiful, savour-in-one-sitting treasure.

This book is fab for anyone who likes stories about magic and mystery. It's main character is Sam, who finds a stone which leads him on a magical and somewhat spooky adventure.hope there will be many more of these books as I couldn't put it down!

This book is fab for anyone who likes stories about magic and mystery. It's about Sam who has just lost his father and is struggling to navigate his way through childhood and grief. He finds a fascinating stone and has a felling that it is very different to anything he has found before. The story becomes mysterious and strange things start to happen, and this makes you want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next. I love the illustrations in this book as they really help to add to the images in your head and the way the book is written through Sam's own eyes, including his thoughts and feelings. Sam's journey is exciting and takes several twists and turns throughout the book.... Read Full Review

“A sombre and meaningful book about the importance of friends and Light at the end of a long tunnel. An awesome read that beautifully compliments the first book “Witch”, into a perfectly brilliant series.”

It is an exciting and thought-provoking read.

Sam’s father is a soldier. One day, he is killed by a bomb in Afghanistan. Sam grieves and misses his father terribly. He also feels guilty about the last time he spoke to his father. The funeral is unbearable, and Sam is angry because he doesn’t know how to deal with the pain and remorse. He also knows that life will never be the same. Then Sam finds a stone that gives him visions in which he sees his father.

Going back to school after the funeral is awful, but then a new girl arrives – an Irish girl called Oona. Sam is enchanted by her, but he is also jealous of his best friend, Chad, whom he believes likes Oona.... Read Full Review
