‘The Contented Pig’ by Daniel Tidbury introduces readers to Pig, who wishes his coat was more like his farm animal friends’. With that we see him try on the coats of the different animals with Goldilocks-style consequences - some are too big, others too small or too tickly. Is a narrative that I would say may also be similar to the ‘That’s not my’ series we find in the end that Pig decides that he doesn’t really need a coat like his friends. I liked the style of the illustrations, the rough paint strokes added character and I think they would be simple enough for children to be inspired into drawing their own farm animals in a similar style. With the subtle message of self-acceptance and recognising and celebrating differences, ‘The Contented Pig’ is a gentle rhyming read for young children to enjoy.
