October 2024 Debut of the Month

Eleven-year-old Maisie’s dad writes books, useful ones with titles like How to Wrestle Crocodiles or How to Build a Zip Wire, but in her eyes he’s just boring, after all, he doesn’t do any of the things he writes about.

Her view of him changes when she accompanies him on the research trip for his next book, How to Survive in Antarctica. By the story’s end, Maisie will have survived a plane crash and attack by leopard seal; she’ll have extinguished a potential deadly fire in the Halley Research Station and been rescued from certain death in a white out. That would be more than enough to make her see her dad differently, but she’s also discovered something truly remarkable about him, something he’s been keeping top secret.

Her adventures make for unputdownable reading, a mix of edge of your seat thrills and travel guide (we learn a lot about Antarctica). Maisie is the perfect narrator too, putting readers at the centre of the action with the kind of eye-view on proceedings only an eleven-year-old could have. Original, funny and action-packed this is a great new series.

I Absolutely loved it! It is great book and impossible to put down.

I loved the style of writing because the storyline was easier to follow than some of my other books I’ve got at home. It was thrilling and impossible to put down. When I first got it I curled up on the sofa and started reading. I loved the part where they crashed into Antarctica. I also loved Maisie’s personality. I’d recommend it to all my friends and I’m sure that they’d love it to.

A great adventure that I completely lost track of time reading as it great!

This is a really exciting adventure with unexpected twists. I completely lost track of time reading this as I got so caught up in the story right from the very beginning. Maisie lives with her dad as her mum died when she was a baby, and she thinks that nothing exciting ever happens, that all that happens is that she does 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles until her dad agrees to take her on a trip to Antarctica for research for his new book. When the plane crash lands, the adventures (and strange happenings) begin. I loved all the information on Antarctica and Maisie was a great character who I liked.... Read Full Review

I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh.

I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh. The book is about a girl called Maisie who goes to Antarctica with her dad. I really liked Maisie and wanted to have an adventure like her. She made me think that I was a lot like her because I love writing and so does she. Maisie has a boring dad who likes to do endless jigsaws and correct train timetables. He also writes books about things that he never had time to do. But then Maisie realise something that makes her dad really exciting. He has a power. And that she has inherited it. She begins to realise just how much she can do with it.... Read Full Review
