At a time when public discourse about refugees presents those seeking safety or a better future as some kind of threat, this book explains the reasons that make them take such dangerous journeys, describes the multitude of challenges they face, and helps readers see them as people just like us. It does this by posing questions children will have, from why do people become refugees, to what is life like in a refugee camp, to why aren’t we all treated the same.
Clear, thoughtful answers are found by lifting flaps. The ability to choose which questions to ask gives young readers agency and lets them proceed at the pace that suits them. The topic is big, complicated, often very sad, but language and approach are perfect for its audience.
In addition to general information, there are personal details from real refugees including six-year-old Omran, who describes what items he took with him when he left his home.
The illustrations are by Ukrainian artist Oksana Drachkovska and remind us on every page of the real individuals who form the 100 million displaced people currently in the world.
It concludes with a ‘things to talk about’ page, including the reminder that we all have roots in other countries. A timely, brilliantly presented and very important book for young children.
