I have reviewed many books in the Bloomsbury readers series, and I have always been impressed by the diversity of stories and styles.

This story can definitely be added to the list for quality and interest. It is the story of a brother and sister, Ariella and Yosef who travel back in time from their school in London, to the London of the 1800’s.  The school was founded at this time by a lady called Clara Conway, a character they are to meet in their time warp. Their meeting with her affects her future in many ways and subsequently the present situation of the two children.

The plot is very clever with a little touch of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, only here the wardrobe is replaced by a library cupboard door. What is clever, is that the artefact that is picked up from the cabinet in the library, denotes the period of time you are transported to. Ariella pick up a soap dish which transports them back to Georgian England. The story line is strong and exciting and would appeal to all those children who love mysteries and history. It is also so descriptive and the detail of Puddle Lane where the school is built is very vivid, both in 1830 and in the present day.

You really get a feeling for the sounds, sights and smells of London. Famous landmarks from both periods such as the shard and the old and new London Bridges also feature. The illustrations too, by Laura Catalan, are detailed and clear and really add to the atmosphere. The topic of popular one and I am sure this book will become a favourite classroom choice.
