Purple Book Band, ideal for ages 6+
A great little read, we all love a rhyming book – brilliant for emerging readers, but also wonderful for children to listen to and guess the matching rhyming words.
The story is about Lola, a dancing bee, who loves to boogie-woogie wherever she goes, and how her habit leads from irritating the other bees to saving the day with her dance moves. The attitude of the bees reminds me of the little penguin Mumble, in Happy Feet.
In addition to the theme of tolerance and exclusivity, there is also the theme of the environment and how it is harder and harder for bees to find the flowers they need to gather nectar. Obviously, these are rather serious themes for little people, but it is never too early to familiarise children with the importance of nature and the role of insects.
It is illustrated so humorously by Pauline Gregory, who captures the mood and personality of the different bees in her sketches. A super new read for the Bloomsbury Library.

About John Dougherty
John Dougherty was born in Larne, Northern Ireland. He studied psychology at university and then tried his hand at a number of jobs including YMCA hostel worker, factory machine operator, and unsuccessful singer-songwriter, before becoming a primary school teacher.
Whilst John was teaching, his interest in children's literature was reawakened and he soon began writing stories and pestering publishers with them. After the publication of Zeus on the Loose (2004) he left teaching and took up writing full-time, only with more tea breaks. More recent books include the critically-acclaimed Stinkbomb & Ketchup-Face series and his poetry collection, Dinosaurs & Dinner-Ladies.
His books have been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards and chosen for various book of the week/year roundups by the broadsheets, but more importantly, they make children giggle.
