This is a fantastic ‘support’ book for teaching Black, Asian and minority ethnic histories for KS3 teachers. As it states in the introduction, it is a resource and not a textbook.
It is a very detailed and helpful resource and could be used to support the history, English or PSHE curriculum. Each chapter is a complete lesson, including an introduction, an exploration, lesson ideas, source-based material, follow up tasks and connections to other sections within the national curriculum. There are also online links to colour images and photocopiable sheets.
It follows history from the medieval period to the present day. It includes such themes as the black figure in the doomsday book, to Tudor links including Shakespeare’s Othello. It makes for fascinating reading as it enquiring and informative and not judgemental. The photos and transcripts are well sourced and interesting, many from the National Archives.
In each section there are probing and thought-provoking questions for discussion and further work. The people and topics that are discussed are very varied, from the well-known nurse Mary Seacole, to soldiers, poets, politicians, and princesses.
It is a really well researched and well-constructed book and a very comprehensive source book. I was really impressed by both its content and layout.
