"A wacky race with a crime to be solved, and a family relationship to be fixed."
Jenny Pearson is the clear winner when it comes to writing stories that stretch credibility just as far as it can go without snapping and can turn, on a sixpence, from hilarious action to moments of real insight and tenderness, especially when it comes to family relationships: in all these respects, Speedwheels 3000 The Race Against Crime is classic Pearson.
Evie Clutterbuck is determined to accompany her dad as navigator on the epic Speedwheels 3000 race – think the Mille Miglia or RAC Rally crossed with Taskmaster – even though it means stowing away in the boot. They need some proper father-daughter bonding time, especially as her dad is still working his way through the grief of losing Evie’s older brother.
No spoiler honest, but the book opens and nearly closes with the two of them in her dad’s beloved Conquest 2000, Toots, hanging off a cliff, only the weight of the stolen gold bullion in the boot stopping them plunging to oblivion. Where the gold came from, and which of their fellow competitors planted it in their car, is the mystery readers are challenged to solve as the two hurtle through European capitals, gradually opening up to one another.
There are scenes that will have you crying with laughter, others that will bring a lump to the throat, while as books about motor races go, this is very hard to beat. Another podium finish for an author way ahead of the field in writing funny, engrossing, sensitive stories (she turns out to be pretty hot at crime capers too).
