A prize trip to the Houses of Parliament turns into a much bigger adventure than anyone could have expected in Sufiya Ahmed’s new book.
Suhana is surprised when her design for a Christmas card for their local MP wins her a prize, but excited to be going into the Houses of Parliament. She’s always quick to learn and interested in what’s going on and spots a group of Fridays for Future protesters outside. She’s just as interested learning about the Suffragettes from their tour guide – sadly she’s got personal experience of prejudice as their teacher Mr Hayes is always quick to criticise her, without cause.
Things take a dramatic turn when Suhana and her classmates Mia and Ayaan suddenly find themselves transported back in time to 1911. Suhana meets the real life Lolita Roy and is amazed to find that Indian people were living in London then – she had no idea - and that some were suffragists. She also makes friends with a girl like her, Reena, and is even tempted to stay in the 20th century until she realises it’s up to her to get her classmates back to the future.
This exciting story story moves at a terrific pace but still delivers lots of historical information and a real sense of the importance of democracy and standing up for what is right.
