June 2024 Book of the Month
Frankly, I can’t recommend Daisy May Johnson’s How to be series more heartily. Whimsical, clever and thrilling, steeped in period flavour and cake-related joy, these mystery-laden books are a refreshing, many-layered tonic for the mind and heart.
In the case of How to be Free, it’s a glorious story of friendship between pupils at the School of the Good Sisters — a wonderful place in which you learn “how to make the sort of friends that stayed with you for the rest of your life” — with the mystery of their missing beloved Headmistress, Good Sister June, at its big heart.
With little more than an ambiguous note to work with, to begin with at least, Hanna, Edie and Calla embark on a clue-strewn mission to find Good Sister June.
Being telescopic in structure — perspectives are focussed on from different angles and points in time – How to be Free, and the rest of the series, is consummately page-turning, with footnotes peppered with tantalising teasers, adding layers of (often amusing) detail.

About
How to Be Free Synopsis
The delightful third book in the 'truly marvellous' (Independent) How to Be series.
Some stories are about friendship. Some are about mysteries. Some are about cake. This one is about all three.
It's the start of a new term at the School of the Good Sisters and Hanna, Edie and Calla are ready to enjoy everything their extraordinary school has to offer. But they soon realise that Something Is Most Definitely Up when their beloved Headmistress Good Sister June disappears - and nobody knows where she's gone.
It's time for Hanna and her friends to set out on an adventure to bring Good Sister June home. As they travel across the country following a trail of clues, they will learn about the power of family, friendship, and a well-timed slice of Victoria Sponge.
