"A book of dark secrets and true friendships based on the story of The Princes in the Tower"
September 2022 Debut of the Month
A wonderful step into Medieval London, set at the end of the War of the Roses. A book of dark secrets and true friendships in a period of history that was both violent and transient. A beautiful and well-constructed story full of suspense and intrigue.
The story of Jack Broom and his desire to grow up to be a surgeon, runs parallel with his mistaken identity and his desire to find out the truth about his past. With the help of his friend Alice, who also has a secret and an air of mystery, the adventure begins in earnest.
Throughout the story, various characters are added to the plot, and no one is quite who they appear to be. Are King Richard’s men to be trusted, are the doctors who they profess to be and is Jack’s Aunt, Old Mother Cobb, really who she says she is?
The story is based around the Tower of London in the days before and after the Battle of Hastings and the war between Richard and Henry and their desire for power. The book gives a very realistic picture of 15th Century England and the life of the everyday Londoner. The descriptions of the various jobs, the role of the soldiers and guards in the Tower, the visits to the tavern and the swims in the river, all paint a lively and visual scene for the reader.
The book is a wonderful mix of fact and fiction, with just enough fact to interest the historian, but with enough mystery, twists, and turns to appeal to the lovers of adventure stories. A very readable and enjoyable book – an exciting read.
