An engaging start to an eco-focused fantasy adventure series. A phone call in the middle of the night changes thirteen-year-old Hannah’s life as she knows it. Called to her grandmother’s bedside, Hannah and her mum race through a storm, Hannah still unsure what’s happening and what caused the rift between her mother and grandmother which meant that Hannah hasn’t seen her grandmother in years. Before they reach her bedside things start to get strange, and more supernatural unexplainable occurrences leave Hannah with tons of questions as she is introduced to her grandmother’s magic and her legacy as Mother Nature, or Gaia’s heir. This was an engaging and easy to read story that I flew through the pages of. J A Browne has a lovely way of describing everything from people and the action to Hannah’s emotions. The writing draws you into the story event through you’re sat with as many questions as Hannah about what is going to happen next. The chapters that offer a change of perspective allows us more insight into this earth that melds magic into the climate crisis and challenges we face outside of these pages. Hannah is a really likeable and relatable main character that I think teen readers will enjoy meeting and this was an entertaining and engaging introduction to the series.
