Amusing 'Magic Porridge' story in a traditional-feeling family. Lance has had enough eggs, thank you. After eating his fill at breakfast, he tries to leave, but is told he must finish. So eat more he does. But the egg just never seems to end. Told he'll be served it again at the next meal, and the next, Lance soon works out that the egg won't go away... it can't be finished! Eventually his parents realise this and immediately start to capitalise on the novelty/money-making opportunities. But what might happen if Lance spoils his dad's ambitions...? Quite funny, though at the start I didn't like the 'eat it at every meal' authoritarian feel of Lance's dad. I enjoyed the sudden twist that meant Lance needed to call on the wisdom of his grandparents, and the small petty 'revenge' of sorts that might be his by the end. Lots of humorous illustrations and I think children will love the play and world of Lance - tents and reading under blankets. There's also a great after-ending where the reader is invited to write on blank pages what they think happens next - nice interactivity there. This will be a good bedtime read for 5-9 year olds.
