LoveReading4Kids Says
A heartfelt picture book highlighting the importance of picking up litter and helping the environment. The Lamb Gang Save the Loch Ness Monster is a rhyming tale that’s perfect for reading out loud, especially for any parents that excel at doing accents. On the shore of Loch Ness is a herd of sheep, and the Loch Ness Monster Nessie loves to watch over their lambs each year. But this year the litter on the loch leads to Nessie choking and the Lamb Gang need to save her. There’s repetition at the start of each day and throughout for younger readers to pick up and join in with while we meet Clover and her twin brother Cloud and read along as they make friends and form the Lamb Gang before discovering a monster in need of help. The story encourages readers to have empathy for the world around them and to look after the environment in order to protect the animals and wildlife. The monochromatic illustrations are lovely and help to bring the story to life. There’s a glossary at the back for the Scottish slang used throughout as well as links to further information about the people and businesses that are working to help save the planet from plastic litter and pollution. A short and engaging, illustrated chapter book that would be great for introducing the topic of litter and the environment, Och-aye-the-noo!

The Lamb Gang save the Loch Ness Monster Synopsis
An educational, environmentally themed, children’s, early reader chapter book following the formation of a gang of lambs on the shores of Loch Ness. This story demonstrates the danger to animals and sea life posed by litter whilst the clearly fictional victim, Nessie, and the happy conclusion, makes the issue one that will not upset young children. Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, swims towards a sheep’s meadow on the shore of Loch Ness to greet the newborn lambs she visits each year. The amount of litter floating in and on Loch Ness appalls Nessie, where she accidentally swallows something, causing her to choke. Nessie mysteriously fails to appear at the lamb’s annual birth. Two twin lambs named Clover (a girl) and Cloud (a boy) are born to a Scottish sheep in a field on Loch Ness. Clover progresses to be the story’s protagonist. The mommy sheep cautions her twins against stepping on the shoreline of Loch Ness at the end of their meadow because of the harmful litter. If in doubt, they must call Nessie for help. But Nessie never appears, leaving her identity a mystery to the lambs. Over several days, Clover and Cloud be-friend four other lambs, Buttercup, Toad, Little Weed, and J. MacKay. Finally, the Lamb Gang of Loch Ness is complete. Clover instigates a game of hide and seek. Whilst hiding, J. MacKay raises the alarm with the Lamb Gang, where they discover a giant monster lying close to its death on the shoreline of Loch Ness. Unaware of the monster’s identity, Clover soon realises it is having difficulty breathing because something is stuck in its throat. She hatches a plan to save the dying monster by jumping on its chest. The Lamb Gang each takes it in turn to jump on the monster, whereby the monster eventually sneezes, dislodging a plastic ‘Loch Spring Water’ bottle from its throat. Having saved the monster from near death, it introduces itself as Nessie, the protector of Loch Ness and its sheep. Grateful for the Lamb Gang's bravery, Nessie dismisses any untrue stories about herself. Nessie and the Lamb Gang are disgusted by the plastic bottle that nearly choked her to death and the effects of litter on the planet’s creatures, whereby Nessie initiates the Lamb Gang into saving the planet from an environmental catastrophe caused by human folk. She then returns to the waters of Loch Ness. The Lamb Gang then makes a start by picking litter to promote saving the planet.
