Alex Rider is fourteen years old and he’s just experienced a life-changing moment: his uncle has died and he knows the official story on how he perished is a lie. What he discovers is that his uncle was a secret agent and that he is now in danger.
Alex must now outsmart an elite band of terrorists if he’s going to save the country. Stormbreaker is a high-octane thriller that will play like a Bond film in your mind as you read it.
Provided with high-tech gadgets, Alex embarks on a mission that will push him to the limits both mentally and physically. I honestly feel that Alex has become a hero for a generation of kids across the world. In the past decade I’ve been a school librarian, I’ve had to replenish this series multiple times due to wear-and-tear. It never goes out of style, nor does it ever become unpopular.
In my opinion, this is due to a few key factors, a lot of kids want to see themselves in Alex: taking on the arrogant, evil adults, putting bullies in their place and speaking truth to power.
Another big part of Stormbreaker’s success is that it roars from one action sequence to the next, making it impossible to get tired of. It also takes on the notion that a spy’s life is a luxury experience - Alex endures the hardships full on and is often worn down by them.
Other themes that make Stormbreaker a hugely popular read are working through grief and standing up for what is right. Alex has to make tough choices throughout Stormbreaker and the series in general and in my opinion sends the right message each time. I’d recommend Stormbreaker for ages 10 and up!
