Writing from the perspective of a dog is certainly a new departure for the author of so many best selling and award winning fantasy novels, but the story of Rebel and his human Tom is masterfully done and is bound to win Ross Montgomery lots of new fans. They are in for an emotional roller coaster and tears are almost inevitable, but it is a gripping and engaging adventure that will give them enormous pleasure too.
Set in an unspecified time and place, but which feels medieval, there is an intriguing plot about an oppressive King and a growing rebellion amongst the oppressed citizens who are being taxed into starvation with brutal guardsmen to enforce curfews and laws. Tom runs off to join the rebels, leaving home, family and Rebel behind. Rebel sets off to try and find his beloved Tom and bring him home to safety.
During his journey, he meets other animals with their own stories, so we build up a real picture of what life is like in this society. Rebel is befriended by wild dog Jaxon and the innocent young dog has much to learn. By the time that he is dramatically reunited with Tom on the battlefield as the rebels try to storm the castle, he has undergone quite a transformation.
The vivid and believable animal and human characters keep the reader really invested in their survival through some narrow escapes and genuine peril. Rebel can teach us all about resilience and bravery and the power of love and loyalty in this really satisfying and enjoyable read.
