Hot on the hairy heels of Wolfboy, Andy Harkness’ Wolfboy is Scared is a jangle of quirky joy. Showing how wildly imaginations can wander, it imparts messages about overcoming the fear of fear, and being kind. The artwork is glorious — created using a virtual reality headset, it’s like seeing stop motion animation on the page, with every tactile character and landscape feature resembling sculpted clay you want to touch (and squish — sorry, Wolfboy!) through the entire story.
As for the story, on noticing that the moon is rising high, Wolfboy and his bunny buddies take a shortcut through the woods to hasten their journey home. Trouble is, this route involves passing “the lair of the GRUMBLE MONSTER”! While Wolfboy insists he’s not scared, his friends can tell he’s bluffing — why else would he suggest they go first, while he offers to hang back to “make sure the monster doesn’t sneak up behind us”?
As they progress through the woods, the author-illustrator conjures exactly how imaginations can run riot when we’re scared. Then, in a funny, perfectly timed twist, the Grumble Monster turns out to be real. When Wolfboy learns that the scary grumbling noise was simply due to him being hungry, he kindly gifts the monster all his moonberries — job done!
