A Julia Eccleshare Pick of the Month June 2023
Set in ancient woodland, Fablehouse is a home to newly arrived Heather who quickly discovers that it is very different to the previous homes she has lived in. Not least because all the children are valued and celebrated.
Not used to being allowed to wander outside on her own and previously too prickly to have friends, Heather finds joy in the world outside – and especially in the strange ruined tower that seems to exude a sense of magic and history. Teaming up with Arlene, Nat and Lloyd, other children from Fablehouse, Heather begins an epic adventure when they meet a figure for long, long ago – Palamedes, a knight from the court of King Arthur. Palamedes, also known as the Black Knight, forges an instant bond with the children.
Like them, he has also been an outsider. His knowledge of the history of the tower opens the children's eyes to the existence of a sinister underworld and the need to rescue the children who are trapped there. This dangerous and exciting mission is at the heart of a warm hearted story that retells the story of children who have experienced care.

About
Fablehouse Synopsis
The beginning of an outstanding new middle-grade adventure series, Fablehouse is a spectacular magical adventure steeped in Arthurian legend...
Unleash your magic. Save your home.
Fablehouse is a children's home like no other. Housed in a crumbling mansion that perches on a cliff and backs on to ancient mysterious woodland, this is the home for many of Britain's Brown Babies, children born to African American GIs and white, British women following the Second World War. Heather has already been through several children's homes and is trying her hardest not to trust Fablehouse and its unusual head teacher, Miss Isolde.
But when children start acting strangely, Heather discovers a plot from a fae realm to infiltrate and overthrow the human world. With the help of Palamedes - the Black Knight from King Arthur's Round Table who has been guarding the magical doorway to the fae world - and three friends, Heather sets off on a quest to rescue the children who have been replaced by changelings.
No child will be forgotten or discarded on her watch. Discovering extraordinary powers and a fire inside herself, Heather will battle to save the first place that has felt like home for years...
