"Radiant with the meaning and traditions of Diwali, this richly-illustrated rhyming picture book is an absolute treasure."
Written in lyrical rhyme by Chitra Soundar, and enriched by Amberin Huq’s warm illustrations, Garland Of Lights shares the story of Diwali in dazzling style.
Structured around a clever counting format — “One lamp welcomes the goddess of wealth…Two lamps to thank the sun and the moon” — it shines a shimmering light on the magic and meaning of the Festival of Lights.
The rhyming text is lucid, inviting, and irresistible to read aloud as young readers are invited to follow a family’s Diwali traditions, among them thanking elders, and thanking the rains for food and grains.
Supported by a glossary and summary of the origins and observances of the festival, Garland Of Lights is a glorious book to gift, or to enhance any primary school library.

The information provided at the back of the book about the history of Diwali (including the significance for Hindus, Sikhs and Jains) and the glossary are excellent additions that help to contextualise this important festival. The concept of explaining Diwali through counting the lamps is a lovely idea to engage younger readers and the illustrations and accessible language that introduce key vocabulary related to this festival provide a excellent prompt for discussions, both for teaching inference and also exploring the different aspects of this festival....
