Bethan Woollvin follows up her eye-catching debut Little Red with another visually captivating and refreshing retelling of a much-loved fairy tale.
With her swathe of bright yellow hair, Rapunzel stands out against the black, white and grey of Woollvin’s palette, and our sense of her personality is just as vivid: was Rapnuzel frightened by the witch, asks the text? ‘Oh no, not she!’ comes the repeated reply.
Indeed, Rapunzel finds a way out of her tower prison and is soon planning a permanent escape from the witch. The text is short and the illustrations equally minimal, but both pack a real punch; Woollvin knows just how to tell a story.

Praise for Little Red:
Bethan Woollvin's version [of Little Red Riding Hood] has a far darker ending - and I loved it. The talented illustrator and writer has taken a childhood niggle as her premise for this bold feminist version of the story: would our caped heroine really have been taken in by a wolf in a bad grandma disguise? ... I won't spoil the ending but let's just say Little Red wraps it up nicely (and warmly) and it has my three year old son thrilled at every read, begging for more. The Times
A talent to watch Daily Mail

This is my book of the year so far ... Woollvin is a striking new talent with strong retro style illustrations and a simple, witty text. Angels & Urchins A unique interpretation of the classic fairytale, shot through with dark humour and a stunning, bold graphic style. Its strong lines and bold colours are excitingly modern New Statesman
A bold (both graphically and narratively) reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Little Red is truly subversive in that it subverts the concept of victimhood with a deliciously dark twist. Huffington Post

About Bethan Woollvin
Bethan Woollvin won the Macmillan Prize for Illustration in 2014 for Little Red – her classy, bold interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood. It was a startlingly confident debut which she followed with an equally striking and feminist take on Rapunzel, with not a handsome prince in sight, followed by her twist on Hansel and Gretel. She is also the illustrator of The Button Book by Sally Nicholls and Meet the Planets by Caryl Hart. The eldest in a family of ten children, Bethan understands well what appeals to a variety of age groups, and all her work exudes a natural dry wit and charm. She graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015 and now lives in Sheffield.
