Lovable eccentric ghosts, the thrill of the theatre, and a crumbling seaside town – what’s not to love in Steven Butler’s latest?
Ella and her mum have moved to Cod’s Bottom, a seaside resort that’s definitely seen better days. She’s cheered to discover the Hippodrome Theatre, even though it’s in a terrible state of disrepair, and even more thrilled to find a gang of youngsters who, like her, are theatre mad. But surprises are instore: the Hippodrome is haunted by the liveliest troupe of deceased thespians you’re ever likely to encounter, all of them keen as mustard to get back into the spotlight. Ella loves them and the theatre, but horrible Councillor Ratsinger is determined to demolish the Hippodrome to make room for a car park. The stage is set for a confrontation! Very funny with some wonderful scenes, this is an absolute treat – encore please!
Theatrically-minded young readers will also love Vivian French’s The Steam Whistle Theatre Company.
