There’s a brand new gang of superheroes in town, small, but ready to have some big adventures, and certain to catch the attention of young readers. Jack and his friends Red, Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel live in Tale Town – you’ll recognise the names of course, and yes, these are the children from the fairy tales. They might be magic, and living in a magic place, but they behave like real children and in this story, Jack is jealous of new boy Anansi, determined to think the worst of him and to stop the others liking him too, whatever it takes. The situation is resolved happily though, with Jack and Anansi firm friends. The magic setting allows for lots of unusual escapades, the characters are appealing, and children will be eager to read more Tale Town stories.
Newly confident readers will also enjoy Angie Sage’s Araminta Spook stories, or Lucy Coats’s Beasts of Olympus series, which take myths instead of fairy tales as inspiration. ~ Andrea Reece
